Student Assistant on Agricultural Land Use and Remote Sensing 

 

Postgraduate (M.Sc. or M.A. student), 6 months, ca. 40h per month, 
from July 1
st, 2022; (with the possibility of a 6 months extension)



The Student Assistant will work with the Junior Research Group TRANSECT (Agrarian Transformations and Social-Ecological Complexities - Local Bioeconomy Scenarios in Central and South Asia) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNE Eberswalde, Germany). The Junior Research Group investigates the social-ecological effects and interdependencies of agrarian transformations in Central and South Asia.

 

Within the project, the Student Assistant will be concerned with mapping agricultural land cover, using remote sensing data (e.g. Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8). Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Visual interpretation of temporal vegetation index profiles (e.g. NDVI)
  • Collection of on screen validation data on historic crop types
  • Collection of on screen validation data on historic land use
  • Quality control and quality assurance
  • Creation of maps and figures


The candidate ideally should have a training in remote sensing and should be able to work independently under the supervision of the TRANSECT team.


General requirements:

 

  • Good command of English
  • Good knowledge of the mathematical/physical basics of remote sensing and the processing of satellite images
  • A good understanding of phenological characteristics of different crop types
  • Practical experience in raster and vector data processing
  • Confident handling of GIS software environments (preferably QGIS)
  • An independent, structured, goal-oriented and reliable way of working
  • Ability to work in a team and good communication skills
  • Ideally, the candidate should have practical experience in the programming environments R and/or Python


Further information:

 

  • Appointment from July 1st, 2022
  • The position is initially limited to 6 month with an option for possible extension of 6 months
  • ca. 10 hours per week
  • Payment according to public pay agreement

 

The Student Assistant will be supervised by TRANSECT member Dr Christoph Raab, remote sensing and GIS researcher, who can be contacted for inquiries regarding the position.
