TRANSECT members Michael Spies and Aksana Zakirova presented their recent fieldwork findings at the conference „Transformations After the Transformation: Central Asia in Focus of Human Geography and Social Sciences,“ which was held at the University of Augsburg, February 7-8, 2020.

The programme consisted of eighteen lectures covering a broad range of topics from the field of social sciences – human geography, anthropology and economic sciences. Aksana presented her first insights from an explorative field research undertaken in Khatlon region of Tajikistan in November and December 2019. Her research has a focus on agricultural transformations, particularly on the declining cotton production – a strategically important cash crop central to the bioeconomy of Tajikistan. Her preliminary findings point to changing environmental conditions and farmers’ adaptation strategies to such changes.

Michael Spies together with Professor Martin Welp (Eberswalde University of Sustainable Development) presented a participatory method of knowledge mapping for developing strategies of wider adoption and re-establishment of agroforestry systems in Central Asia. Knowledge mapping is inspired by the so-called  MARISCO method that will also be utilised for scenario building within the TRANSECT project (https://www.marisco.training/). Key stakeholders’ systemic knowledge is essential for participatory policy and strategy development and offers important lessons for the promotion of sustainable land use in Central Asia and beyond.
